Convert gas readings into kWh

Our gas reading for the gas meter is in cubic meter but SP Services will charge us in kWh which is normal. But SP Services does not share the formula on how this is converted to kWh. I am now pushing SP Services to reveal this formula to the customers at large in Singapore.

gas meter

Formula used to convert meter cube to kWh
(meter cube use X volume correction factor X calorific value)/kWh conversion factor

We know the meter cube use through our gas meter and the kWh conversion factor which is 3.6. But we do not know the volume correction factor and calorific value. We need to know the calorific value which is the amount of energy given off when burnt. This value is different for the different gas suppliers in your country.

SP Services has wrote back to me about the conversion of cubic meter into kWh. They used conversion factor of 5.175 to convert cubic meters to units (kWh).

Example:
Meter Reading taken on 18 June 2014: 7203
Meter Reading taken on 20 July 2014: 7323
Difference in readings: 120
Usage in kWh: 120 X 5.175 = 621kWh

Now, you should know the amount of cubic meter that your household is using for your pipe gas from the SP Services Bill. We also help customers to analyse their energy bills and also how to reduce them in your home.

SS 577: 2012 Water Efficiency Management System (WEMS)

This is one of the latest Singapore Standards on the water management in Singapore. It helps an organisation to be accountable for water usage. PUB is targeting customers with more than 5000 cubic meters to be SS 577 certified.

I have successfully help my organization to work towards the goal of getting SS 577 certification. It is a tough process and involve many departments within the organization in order to ensure that your are able to get the certification. We have engage a  Water Efficiency Manager who act as a consultant to help us and our organization to achieve the goal.

The SS 577 has a framework and guide lines to help you to improve your water usage and efficiency. It will allowed you to know where your organization is utilizing the water. Many organizations are unaware of where their water are been consumed. Developing a Water Efficiency Management Plan (WEMP) will give you an overview of your water usage and bills.

I am hoping that we can achieve the PUB Water Efficiency Building (WEB) Gold Certification. The organization must obtained the SS 577 and be the top 10% most water efficiency company in the industry.

I will talk more about how to fill in the WEMP plan for PUB in my next blog post.

World Cup 2014 Screening

The World Cup 2014 fever is sweeping Singapore across the island. But this time we will envy our Malaysia friends across the border as they can watch it free on RTM 1. We can only watch from the comfort of our living room if you are willing to part with $112 to Singtel.

People Association has bought the World Cup screenings to most of the community centres in Singapore. The only thing you must watch with many of your neighbours and unknown peoples. But this is a way the PA is using to embrace the Kampung spirit or allow you to mingle with your neighbours.

My friend saw our PM and his bodyguard at Cheng San CC watching the match with the residents.

Malaysia is screening most of the World Cup 2014 matches on RTM 1. Starhub Cable users have this channel but the signal will be scramble to ensure you have no access to it. This is the hard truth we have to accept in a pay TV market. But if you have the MATV system which connect to our roof top antenna and you stay in Woodlands, u can get the RTM 1 signal. The signal might not be clear depending on where u stay.

If you have not subscribe and like to catch the World Cup Matches, just head to the nearest CCs. The schedule of the screening can be find at the below link:

Panasonic Semiconductor sold to UTAC Singapore

It was a historic moment for Panasonic Semiconductor buyover by UTAC Manufacturing. It has many meanings for Panasonic staffs who have work there since the 1980s.  Even big electronic giants like Panasonic cannot escape the down trend of electronic component prices.

It also brings back great memories for me althought I have left Panasonic Semiconductor for more than 2 years. I still keep close contacts with my previous colleagues who are working there. It was a smooth transition for them and none of them lost their job through this buyover.

These snapshots by the staffs will bring great memories to us in years to come. 2nd June 2014 was a date for us to remember when UTAC Manufacturing takes over the existing facilities.

19,000 stranded by SMRT third train delay on 20 Jan 2014

SINGAPORE – About 19,000 passengers were affected when train services on the North-South Line were disrupted for more than an hour during the morning rush hour yesterday -€” the third delay to hit transport operator SMRT in less than a week.

The latest incident, which began at about 8.10am due to a train fault and ended around 9.46am, caused scores of commuters to be late for classes and work. A group of passengers had to wait inside a train that stalled 500m from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station for more than 30 minutes before they could eventually disembark.

SMRT also had to close most of the fare gates at Ang Mo Kio, Bishan and Yio Chu Kang MRT stations to prevent more commuters from pouring into the stations and crowding the already packed platforms.

Yesterday’s disruption followed a 46-minute delay at the Bukit Panjang LRT line on Sunday, and delays on Jan 16 and 11 which lasted about 2.5 and 1.5 hours on the East-West Line and North-South Line respectively.

Speaking at a press conference to explain yesterday’s incident, SMRT President and Chief Executive Desmond Kuek said the recent breakdowns were unrelated, but they remained a serious concern.

SMRT staff and engineers have been working hard to reduce such incidents, he said, noting that train withdrawals are down from 3.3 per 100,000km last year to around 2.2 now. “We are targeting to bring down the withdrawal rate even further this year, to possibly below two per 100,000km,” he said.

The latest breakdown came four days after the Public Transport Council (PTC) announced a 3.2 per cent fare hike from April 6 for public train and bus services. When asked how SMRT would justify the hikes in view of the breakdowns, Mr Kuek said SMRT had applied for the fare hikes due to rising costs of maintaining a safe and reliable transport system.

Calling the timing of the breakdowns “most unfortunate”, he said the decision to raise fares was made by the PTC in view of fare affordability for commuters and operational costs needed to keep the system reliable and safe.

The Land Transport Authority said an investigation will be conducted. “Given the inconvenience to commuters, the LTA has directed SMRT to provide a full report on the incident, including the recovery measures carried out, and an assessment on what more could be done to help commuters adjust their travel plans,” it added.

The disruption began when a signal fault occurred at about 8.10am, said SMRT Vice-President of rail operations Alvin Kek. The fault activated the automatic train protection and service brakes, causing a southbound train to stall about 500m from Ang Mo Kio station.

A train behind the stalled one, which had left Yio Chu Kang MRT Station before the incident, pushed the affected train to Ang Mo Kio MRT Station so passengers could alight.

About 1,800 commuters alighted from the stalled and working trains at 8.54am and 9.13am respectively. Some commuters boarded the free bus and shuttle services that had started at 8.30am, while others took another train to continue their journey.

Ms Daisy Tan was among those on the affected train when it stalled abruptly after leaving Yio Chu Kang MRT Station.

“People were pressing the emergency button,”€ the 42-year-old said, describing the conditions in the train as “€œvery hot and stuffy”€ as the air-conditioning had stopped.

She also recalled there was a jerk when the second train made contact with the stalled train and began pushing it slowly. Although she did not see anyone fall, she felt a warning announcement should have been made before the two trains made contact.

Postgraduate student Tay Xiong Sheng was half an hour late for his class due to the delay. He had boarded the train at Woodlands, but took the shuttle bus after he heard SMRT announcing the service delays.

The 28-year-old felt directions to the shuttle buses could be made clearer as fellow commuters felt lost when looking for these alternate forms of transport.

He said: “€œThe coordination wasn’€™t very good. We were walking in loops to find the shuttle bus.”

It was unforunate the incident happen just one week after the PTC announced the transport cost will be increased by at least 3% for commuters.

Maybe we should really think about nationalising the transport network in Singapore.

Last Drive Built At Seagate AMK

LastDrive

This is the last drive built at Ang Mo Kio Seagate. Seagate has been one of the major employers in Singapore since the 1980s. They have more than 10000 staffs in the 1990s era.

I have worked with colleagues who are previously retrenched from Seagate. These retrenched staffs have a windfall of more than S$70K as they have work with Seagate for more than 20 years.

Although the last drive has rolled out from Ang Mo Kio, LIFE still goes on. Seagate is still going strong in SIngapore as they have three plants in Woodlands. I am not sure how long they will sustain in Singapore as cost goes up. Every CEOs want to maximize profits for the company and there will be a day when there is no more production facilities here.

Ask any Seagate employees, they will tell you that the company treat them well in terms of salary and compensation. But shifting of jobs to other countries which are lower cost than us is very fast also. Every Seagate employee is prepare for this uncertainty already.
